Principal Team Leader

Site Reliability Engineering and Cloud Operations

January 2022 - Present

As the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) and Cloud Operations Lead, I’m honored to serve in two positions at once. First, I’m responsible for leading and building our cloud operations capability. This requires leading a vendor managed team of cloud operations engineers that are be responsible for installing, maintaining, and operating infrastructure and systems needed for our manufacturing and distribution businesses. This requires driving the team to automate extensively, measure success, and drive operational excellence in the cloud. Second is partnering with our engineering teams to drive and deliver SRE best practices throughout our in-house development projects. Together, we act as advocates for process automation and the continuous improvement of designs to maximize resiliency.

Cognosos, Inc

Senior Product Reliability Engineer

November 2020 - January 2022

Original reliability engineer, responsible for laying the foundations of a reliability team focused on applying SRE principles to the existing product lines. My mission is alerting proactively instead of reactively scrambling when customers create inbound tickets for issues. This includes educating team members on SLOs, and implementing proper monitoring and alerting around corresponding SLIs to ensure SLAs are met. Architected a software platform to feed data and custom time series metrics and reports into Prometheus. Data for this platform is gathered and correlated against multiple MySQL instances, as well as our Kinesis steams containing data to be processed and stored in ElasticSearch. This allows a leap forward in viewing trends of data moving through the system, and identifies data discrepancies between data stores. Data is viewed via Grafana dashboards reporting on application performance, data integrity and battery management.

Site Reliability Engineer III

Responsible for the creation and maintaining of SLO documents, as well as monitoring and alerting around associated SLIs. Support mission critical production services through automation, capacity planning and deployments via tools such as docker and chef. Focused on performance, scalability, redundancy and tuning of multiple global ScyllaDB deployments in both AWS and datacenter. Part of a multi-team effort focused on the successful migration and aggregation of servers and services to a new physical datacenter, while sunsetting old locations with no service interruptions and reducing toil.

Developed CompDrive.com, a cloud based solution for tracking and managing OSHA, D.O.T., and various other types of compliance information. CompDrive was a solution for secure and scalable electronic records keeping and notification. It was built utilizing PHP (CodeIgniter), Python, Percona (MySQL), and deployed via AWS. The application allowed companies to take a proactive approach to safety via regular training and maintenance. Compared to current competition at the time, CompDrive increased efficiency and accuracy of records keeping by many orders of magnitude due to the ability to tag multiple resources, documents and events at a single time.

Worked in a fast paced, multi-faceted, agile environment to maintain and enhance our merchant and partner facing portal used for PCI Compiance certification using a wide variety of tools and technologies including, PHP, Python, SQLAlchemy, MySQL, Nginx, Apache, and ExtJS. Created tools used to migrate our entire portfolio to our new vulnerability scanning solution that I also maintain. Acted as release manager for creating and code-reviewing weekly code releases using mercurial. Responsible for data integrity in syncing between multiple complex systems, including Salesforce.com, using SOAP and RestFull APIs. Worked with internal penetration testers to harden merchant portal against potential attacks. Collaborated with third-party, international vendors, to allow seemless integration of re-branded products to be managed from within our system. Extensivie optimizations and tuning changes to improve performance of multiple MySQL databases and queries ran against these databases.

AutoPILOT Magazine

Software Engineer

September 2009 - May 2011

Developed and administered a web application using full LAMP stack that showcased the regional AutoPILOT magazines while at the same time allowed the editors and staff to instantly update articles and news entries. Free-lance writers also were able to upload and maintain articles they had written that could then be integrated into the main site once approved. Custom ad integration that tied into the existing sales methodologies was also incorporated into the sites on a weighted round-robin basis. This application also included a custom built forum for the discussion of the various topics covered in the magazines and a social networking area that permitted pilots and aviation companies to connect with each other sharing stories, experiences, and an overall love of aviation.

Independently mapped erosion of Shoal Creek and deployed automated data collection sites to collect information used to correlate stream depth and flow as compared to weather fluctuations. Created standalone software using MATLAB that automated comparisons between data collected from the various sites along the stream against weather stations on the property for both atmospheric pressure and precipitation.
