Christopher Gill

All things me

Great job on finding me! The first question I usually get is "Chris or Christopher?" I will answer to either honestly. It's amazing the number of people who subconsciously shorten it to Chris no matter what, even after I introduce myself with the full name. I will say, if you are even remotely in earshot of my mom, or will ever be in her presence, it is absolutely Christopher! Much to my embarrassment, she'll call you out in front of everyone with an, "Excuse me, I named him Christopher." Honestly there are so many people with the shortened name, that most people know exactly who you are talking about when you say Christopher instead of Chris.

Now that we have that resolved, let's dive into some stuff about me!

Early Years

I was born and raised in Griffin, GA. If you have never been there, good for you! I'll save you a trip to Google Maps. Everyone from there will tell you, "It's halfway between Atlanta and Macon."

Growing up in Griffin, GA, I was all over the place with activities. I was active (then not active - then active again) in Boy Scouts - eventually achieving Eagle on the last possible week of eligibility. I started a DJ business when I was 12 (even had my mom dropping me off for gigs until I was old enough to drive). That was absolutely the best job I could have hoped for since it paid well and I had excuses to go to parties all the time! On the opposite side of DJ'ing big parties, I took part in Cotillion, eventually being asked to come back to assist with teaching it. I took part in the Governor's Honors Program where I got to spend a summer at Valdosta State expanding my knowledge of science and design. I also was extremely active on the junior bowling league. Let's see, oh yeah! I also was a short order line cook for my mom at the local Elk's Lodge. This skill turned out to be quite lucrative during my college years and beyond.

Like I said, I was all over the place. That trend continued throughout college and into my professional years as well. Speaking of college, I was accepted into the Georgia Institute of Technology where I spent a lot longer than expected. I originally went on Hope Scholarship where I promptly failed my first class and lost it. I still tell people, "I went to college with Hope. I quickly lost hope and remained hopeless." I started out majoring in Electrical Engineering and spent my first few years struggling to pass the math required for it. For questions around why I struggled so much, I ask you to revisit paragraph one. I even went back to my high school principal to tell him I wasn't prepared at all for college. I was told, "We aren't trying to prepare students for colleges like that. Our goal is to get them through community college at best."

I finally passing all of the hard math required for electrical engineering when I discovered that the classes I enjoyed the most were computer science focused with an emphasis on algorithms and programming. After my counselor in electrical engineering told me I should just give up and drop out, I switched to computer science and didn't look back. I still fought with academic probation, but I eventually got out with my degree. Georgia Tech humbled me beyond measure, but it also taught me how to learn (something that I was never forced to learn in Spalding County Schools).

Working through college gave me a decent amount of experience when it came time for something that was full-time and permanent. My resume can carry you down the path of that journey to now.
